You'll want to find a teacher who can inspire your child while developing a love and appreciation of music.

The Port Huron Music Teachers Association has member teachers providing instruction on piano, voice, violin, and other instruments. Their referral system can help you locate a teacher in your area. You will want to set up an interview with the prospective teacher, visit them in their studio, and make plans to attend their next recital.

When you meet with the teacher, consider asking these questions:

  • What is your music education experience?
  • What age groups do you teach?
  • Do you attend workshops or seminars?
  • What is your studio policy?
  • How do you communicate your evaluation of the student's progress?
  • What elements do you include in your teaching curriculum?
  • Are students required to perform in recitals?
  • Other than recitals, what opportunities do you offer students, such as festivals and adjudicated competitions?
  • How much practice do you require?

Students say...

"My teacher equipped me with the tools necessary to excel in the music department"

"I was very well prepared"

"I've grown to love and appreciate music in many ways"

"My PHMTA teacher helped instill in me a passion for music that I know will never go away"

"Her encouragement and support pushed me further than I thought I could go"
